THE GULF OF MEXICO SURVEY FEB – APRIL 2006
SCOTT W PARKER
Project Description
The Gulf of Mexico Survey is a three
month endeavor to travel the road completely around the Gulf and create a portfolio
of drawings, paintings and photographs. The project will begin in February and
finish in April of 2006. Armed with the experience and lessons from the National
Park Project I will now further explore North America creating Artwork. Unlike
the previous project I will not have established site specific subjects, instead
I will address individual subject as I find it and compile a complete artistic
survey of my experiences along this road.
While studying a map of North America
I was drawn to the boundary of the Gulf, a constant shore from the southern Florida
peninsula, across the Mississippi Delta, down through Texas, into Mexico and
finally the Yucatan peninsula. Only 385 miles by air separate Key West and Cancun;
however it will be approximately 3700 miles on the ground. The presence of distinct
places and inhabitants connected by one road across two countries piqued my curiosity.
The course of my Survey will take me from the Florida Keys north. Passing through
resort and winter communities I will continue north to the panhandle and across
into the hurricane ravaged southern Gulf States including New Orleans. Proceeding
along the coast of Texas and across the border into Mexico I will document my
experiences. Investigating this nation as I make my way to the Yucatan Peninsula
where I will find Mayan ruins. This road will lead me through the different areas
of industry and conditions that occupy the Gulf in two countries. I will focus
on the similarities and differences of the people and places which occupy this
shore while completing my work. The goal is to produce a stimulating collection
of work which captures the spirit of these areas while taking my artistic pursuit
to the next level of excellence.
Upon completion of the survey I will
compile the images and self publish a catalog for the Gulf of Mexico Survey to
share my adventure as well as advertise my work and achievement. This catalog
will be funded by sales of completed work. Every exhibition opportunity possible
will be pursued.
