This is a little plant know as Silversword.
Isolated on the left and shown with it's friends on the right. Living
in what other plants would consider inhospitable conditions, the Silversword
thrives. Hot days, freezing nights sparse rain challenge the hardy plant.
Here's the cool part: Once during the plant's life, it sprouts a tall
flower stalk as tall as 6 feet showing reddish flowers. The yellow faced
bee found almost solely on the upper slopes of the Haleakala volcano pollinates
the plants, ensuring their survival. Protecting the bee's environment
also ensures the survival of the plants. Click on an image to see a larger version.
